Final Seconds - Motorbike Fire Stunt Ends In Tragedy (Stephen Ladd 1972)
Stephen Alan Ladd - the name probably doesn't ring any bells. But he deserves to be remembered, as his fire tunnel stunt must be one of the most dramatic pieces of daredevil footage ever captured. After breaking the record he went in again - and it ended in tragedy.....

I went to school with a guy who was an absolute genius auto mechsnic and a gifted driver as well. He knew little of physics or math beyond the basics, though. My generation grew up watching Evel Knievel, Burt Reynolds movies, and the "Dukes of Hazzard." Inspired by those he decided that he was going to jump his '70 Chevy Nova off of a 25' (7.6 m) sheer dropoff to see how far he could go through the air. Many of us warned him that he'd almost certainly nose in and possibly endo flip, but he insisted that he knew far more about cars and driving than we ever would. He was doing about 60 mph (96.5 kph) when he left the edge. The Nova is a notoriously nose-heavy unibody car and somewhat fragile for its day. The front dropped immediately, dug in hard, and the car flipped tail over nose at an angle. It bent, dtopping the roof to the doorsills in front, the driver's door buckled and jammed, the passenger door and trunklid sprang open. He was unconscious, bleeding a lot, and was thoroughly trapped. There was no fire but gasoline was leaking copiously. This was before cellphones and in a somewhat remote lication so it took about an hour for EMS to arrive. They cut him out fairly quickly, but he'd suffered badly frim the crash and the long wait. He ended up with brain damage, some permanent paralasis, internal njjuries, and broken bones. This story very much reminded me of him, though my schoolmate did live through his overconfidence.

He knows a lot about cars but didn't think only have enough fuel to drive it off the cliff? Did he have a helmet on at least? The real tragedy in this story is that he lived and has the potential to muck up the gene pool worse than it already is.

When you say 'for every Evel Knievel or Eddie Kidd there was somebody who didn't make it...' like Eddie Kidd when he had his accident. Love the line about pre stunt preparation being to 'down a couple of cans'... often these were the inspiration for the stunt "Yer' know lads *hic* I reckon I could jump the gap between these two multistory carparks on my little brothers Chopper *hic* if I strapped... eh *hic* ehhh *Hic* ...a couple o' hundred firework rockets to th' frame."

I can't imagine anyone wanting to work or live in that building after the tragedy of that fire, even if the building were renovated to meet new fire safety codes! The high population density in some of Brasil's largest cities make high rises an inevitability, just as in other areas of the world, where there are high population densities. :/

at least Evel Kneviel studied scientifically his stunts ahead of time and prepared usually for the worst outcomes and wore some protective gear and had proper rescue and emergency services prepared. My neighbor destroyed his face by trying the plank and board jumps on his mini banana seat bike and had serious reconstructive surgery for broken facial bones and jaw wired shut for months as a result. He was five or six.

The fire brigade was pretty casual about the whole thing but even if they had had hoses charged and ready, running right into an enclosed space with 1000C temperatures was going to be quickly fatal no matter what they did. The flames themselves were not what was so lethal, and the real danger Stephen Ladd did not count on. It was the hot gasses they released. 1000C gasses will burn lungs like tissue paper soaked in petrol. Even if the outside of his body had been completely unburnt, his lungs would have been fatally injured. Smoke and hot gasses, not the fire itself, are what kills most of the time, and almost certainly are what killed Stephen Ladd. His first run, those hot gasses hadn't had a chance to accumulate, so he just ran through full speed. Second time, he crashed... and the first breath in that inferno would have been fatal. He really had not the faintest idea what he was doing. Aluminum baking pans to protect his crankcase? No fire-resistant suit? And most of all, no *idea* of the physics of fire and the source of its dangers, other than "fire hot, durrr?" He died because of ignorance and foolishness, simple as that.
